C2E2 ’11! (ARTIST ALLEY BOOTH C13)

I'll be back in Chicago this year, March 18-20,  for C2E2 2011!  It's just one short week away.  Seems like I just got back from ECCC yesterday.  ...well, I guess I technically got back late Tuesdy, so there's that.  But anyway, I'm excited to get back to C2E2 this year.  I love Chicago.  I had a blast last year.  I think this year will even be better.

I'm going to be set up in Artist Alley booth C13. I'll have all of my usual stuff at the booth: an assortment of comics, prints, original artwork from projects like Detective Comics, Red Hood, Arkham Reborn, and  Gotham City Sirens.  I'm ALSO going to have a big stack of $25 ORIGINAL ARTWORK!!! It's going to be stuff from all over my career.  While it's not necessarily going to feature big moments and main characters, the $25 stack is quality stuff and a hell of a deal!

So if you're in the Chicago area, be sure to drop by C2E2, see the show, and say "hi!"  It's going to be a great time!

For even more information, check out their website http://www.c2e2.com/

Thanks

NEW COMICS WEDNESDAY 11- WHAT I BOUGHT!

Hot on the heels of last week's New Comics Wednesday 10, I'm back with this weeks new stack of stuff.  It wasn't a huge week, but a lot of fun stuff hit the stands.

SECRET WARRIORS #25

CAPTAIN AMERICA & THE FIRST THIRTEEN #1

THE NEW AVENGERS #10

PUNISHER MAX #11

VENOM #1

MARVEL ADVENTURES: HULK  #12 (for the boy)

ULTIMATE SPIDER MAN #155

B.P.R.D. HELL ON EARTH: GODS #3

X-MEN LEGACY: #246

CONAN: ROAD OF KINGS #3

BATMAN INCORPORATED #3

THE WALKING DEAD #82

I'm especially looking forward to Walking Dead, Secret Warrior, B.P.R.D., Batman Inc, Punisher Max, Venom, and Captain America & the First Thirteen.  On a negative note this week, after all of my buddy Tony Moore's hard work there seems to be a printing S.N.A.F.U. on Venom #1. So if you find that the book looks a bit blurry or muddy, it's not Tony or John Rauch (the colorist) fault.  On the positive side of things, I'm so excited to see what Rick Remender and Tony bring to Venom.  It's going to be a hell of a lot of fun.  I'm also really looking forward to reading Captain America & the First Thirteen.  I'm loving everything Kathryn Immonen has been doing for a good long while now.  She tells some amazing stories.  I'm equally excited to see the team up of Ramon Perez on art and John Rauch on colors on the book.  Ramon and John are an amazing team.  Happy to see them together on the book.

Alright, so that's it for this week's New Comics Wednesday.  See you next week, just before I head out for C2E2!

Thanks

LIFE DRAW STUDIO SESSION 25! (NSFW)

This past Wednesday, we had our 25th Life Draw Studio session. We've been meeting now for over a year and I have to say that the sessions just keep getting better and better. This week one of our favorite models, Courtney, returned to pose for us again.  She's an amazing model who really pushes herself to give us creative poses.  It's always pretty exciting to see what she comes up with.

As usual, we did 10- one minute, 5- two minute, 4- five minute, and 2- ten minute drawings.  This time around though, rather than the usual final 20 minute drawing we had a little extra time and decided to do a 30 minute final drawing.  It was a lot of fun.

So here are a few of my favorite pieces from this session.  I was really happy with how a lot of it came out.

1 minute drawings:  These were done in Sharpie on 8 1/2 x 11 paper.  I usually use larger 11 x 17 paper, but I haven't made it to the paper supply to pick up more so I'm stuck with smaller stuff.  It's a nice challenge. Sometimes I end up with several images on one piece and sometimes I quickly find myself filling a single sheet.  The model, Courtney, always does such interesting and at times complex poses for the one minute drawings. I'm constantly finding myself trying like mad to get everything down.  Even though these are quick, and sometimes kind of off, I still love doing them.

2 minute drawing:  Two minute drawings are always kind of tricky. In my head, after doing super quick one minute drawings, having double the time seems like FOREVER.  Of course, I get caught up in details, especially things like hair, and don't end up getting everything down. I've been really working lately on getting that nice Contrapposto stance down.  With the two minute pieces I focused on the torso and really worked on that bend at the waist and hips.  I'm really happy with the way these came out.  Especially the first and last ones.

5 minute drawings: I liked these five minute drawings.  The first one is pretty elongated.  I really wanted to get the pose down and didn't take much time to measure.  I run into that a lot in these. Proportion suffers.  I work so hard to get stuff just right in my comics work. At life drawing I kind of just let go.  It's nice.  For the second one, I stepped away from my trusty Sharpie and grabbed a crappy Paper Mate blue ballpoint pen.  I'm not sure why, but for some reason I really love working in ballpoint pen.  It's just a lot of fun and you get some interesting stuff out of it.  I wanted to focus on the face and hair with this one.  It's not quite perfect, but I think it still had a nice feel.  I kind of wish I could have done more on the piece.  Would have made a nice 10 minute.

10 minute drawings:  I'm really fond of both of these 10 minute pieces.  In the first one Courtney's pose was just excellent. I drew a quick pencil framework and then went in with a felt tip pen and brush pen and tried a fun, stylized, angular look.  I focused a lot on the shape.  I had just about 45 seconds to lay in the black with the brush pen.  I think it gave it a nice contrast to the thin angular linework.  I wanted to go in a completely different direction for the second one.  Again I started with a quick pencil sketch but then I went in with the brush pen went for a more drybrush effect.  It was a nice piece.  Also, again the pose was pretty amazing.  She stayed like that for 10 minutes.  I probably would have pussed out after about a minute.

30 minute drawing: I really liked this finished piece.  The extra 10 minutes really helped.  Although, it was actually only eight extra minutes.  My pencil died and I had to franticly dig up another one.  I went in with a quick pencil drawing things are still a bit elongated.  I probably need to start getting that under control.  Still, like I said earlier, this is about fun and just letting go.  After I got things basically where I wanted them with pencil. I went in with the brush pen and did all of the detail work.  I had a lot of fun with the face and hair.  I think they really turned out well.  After that I took the Copic Neutral Gray 2 and 4 brush markers and laid in the grayscale. This is something I do with almost all of my finished pieces. It always seems to work for me and has as finished a look as you can get in 20-30 minutes.

Alright, that's it for this look at our Life Draw Studio session.  I hope you enjoyed it. I'll try to put these up every time we have a new session.  I think they're a lot of fun.
Thanks

DESK SHOT 19!

Here is a quick peek at the finished Punisher pre-order con sketch I did before leaving for C2E2.  I intended to post it along with the black and white image, but didn't have this image on my laptop.

I'm really happy with the way this turned out.  As you can see I added some nice Neutral Gray Copic Markers (N1, N2, & N4).

I love doing this sort of thing.  It lets me play with characters that I normally don't get the chance to draw.

Anyway, I hope you dig it!  I'll have more fun desk shots for you all soon!

Thanks

NEW COMICS WEDNESDAY 10- WHAT I BOUGHT!

I'm getting to this a little wait this week. Between Emerald City Comic Con and forgetting my power cord, I wasn't able to get  New Comics Wednesday up as planned.  Still, better late than never.

Here is what I picked up this last week.  I'm going to skip a lot of commentary this time around.  I didn't get to read hardly anything before leaving for the show.  I'm pretty excited to get to it, though!

INCOGNITO #4

CAPTAIN AMERICA AND THE FALCON #1

JOE THE BARBARIAN #8

LOCKE AND KEY: KEYS TO THE KINGDOM #5

ULTIMATE CAPTAIN AMERICA #3

DAREDEVIL REBORN #2

WITCHFINDER: LOST AND GONE FOREVER #2

So that's it for this New Comics Wednesday...just in time for next week's edition. :)  See you then!

DESK SHOT 18!

I had a few minutes and finally got around to doing a few quick graytones on the Zatanna piece. I used a Neutral Gray No. 2 and 4 on the piece.  It gave it a nice bit of depth.  I also decided to add a few grayscale stars in there just for fun.  I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out!

DESK SHOT 17!

Okay, technically, I'm at Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle, but I thought I'd go ahead and put up a desk shot anyway.  I finished up this Punisher sketch moments before leaving for the airport.  The final version has some nice Copic greyscale marker on it.  I'm really happy with the way it turned out.  While I love sketching at shows, I can't really sink the same amount of time into a con sketch.  It's a different kind of beast.  Whenever I have the time I try and take sketch pre-orders.  It lets me spend an hour here and fifteen minutes there on a piece.  I'll put up scans of the piece from pencils to finished piece as soon as I can.

Alright, I'd better get back to sketching!  Lots to do!!

Thanks

DESK SHOT 16!

I wasn't able to get to this Zatanna commission a couple weeks ago at Hurleycon.  On the upside, the guy who was willing to patiently wait for his piece gets this piece that I've spent a bit of extra time on every chance I get.  It was penciled on a nice piece of semi smooth Bristol 500 series board and inked with a 102 crow quill nib. As soon as I get the chance I'm going to go ahead and throw some gray tones on here in Copic marker.  Check back soon to see the final results!

Thanks
