30 DAY PHOTOGRAPHY CHALLENGE! (DAY 11)

As we roll around to day eleven of the 30 Day Photography Challenge I'm a busy busy boy. Still, taking a break and walking around downtown for a few minutes was probably the highlight of my day. So much of this month long challenge has really got me thinking about how much I love shooting and just need to give in and make it a part of every single day.

Today's challenge- A Black And White Photo.

I don't really shoot in black and white. I'm not really sure why. Maybe it's the fact that I draw black and white images all day every day. Maybe it's my love of vivid color. Hell, maybe it's that I'm lazy...because let's face it, a good black and white photo is just tough to pull off.

For today's challenge I found myself back in my favorite alley downtown. There's just so much to capture. I love the juxtaposition of lines, angles, and varying shapes. I'm pretty sure I could shoot there forever. One of my favorite aspects has always been the two overhead walkways that connect two of the old warehouses. I got the chance to run around in shoot in them a few months ago. Hopefully I can get back in there for a couple shots later in this challenge. Anyway, enough about the setting. I like the way this photo turned out. I would have liked to push the contrast a bit more. It's close to what I wanted, but there is a bit too much midtone for my tastes. Still, it was fun to do. I'm going to go ahead and make the proclamation that I'll do at least two more black and white photos over the course of this challenge. That's what this thing is for, right? Stepping out of our wheelhouses and enjoying ourselves. I like that.

As always, if you'd like to know more about the 30 Day Photography Challenge, possibly join in on the stepping out and the enjoying ourselves, or just check out some of my pal Melodie's timeless photography, go to her blog-

30 DAY PHOTOGRAPHY CHALLENGE! (DAY 10)

Well, we're now a third of the way through the 30 Day Photography Challenge. Pretty impressive, right? Well, I think so.

Today's challenge- A Photo Of Whatever You Please.

Another one of these, eh? How is it that the moment I get the freedom to be creative and shoot whatever I please, I freeze up? Silliness.

After taking nearly a dozen shots for this challenge, I was messing with my iPhone camera outside my studio and got this shot. There is this big sodium vapor lamp that lights the path my studio to the house that shines a brilliant green through my iPhone lens. I'm sure there is a perfectly reasonable explanation why. I should look it up sometime on this infernal device. But until then, I just think it looks cool. So for no particular reason, I chose this shot. There was just something about it-- the light-- the angle-- something. Anyway, I hope you dig it. And if you don't there are twenty more days of challenges for me to make up for it. :)

So yeah,  if you'd like to know more about the 30 Day Photography Challenge, possibly join in on more fun than you can shake a stick at, or just check out some of my pal Melodie's stunning photography, go to her blog-

30 DAY PHOTOGRAPHY CHALLENGE! (DAY 9)

It's day nine of the 30 Day Photography Challenge and I'm not going anywhere. I've got to be honest, I didn't really know if I'd be able to keep up with this. Even more honest, during this crazy deadline this challenge might just be the one thing that keeps me sane. :)

Today's challenge-- A Photo Of Something From A Distance

This is my neighborhood. My house is over there behind the trees. In the distance. I got the chance to take a break form drawing and do some quick shots in the Olivia Apartments, here in Joplin. It's a beautiful old hotel in the midst of some major restoration, that's just a block away from my house and studio. Pretty much perfect for me. Stuff to explore. Times gone by. A bit of urban decay. I went up to the roof just to look around and catch the view. I stood there, looking at the tiniest bit of my studio peeking through the trees.  It was there, in the distance.  I thought what a PERFECT thing for today's challenge. I whipped out my trusty iPhone 4 and this is what I got. It's a shot that makes me happy. A beautiful day and a great vantage point. Couldn't ask for anything more.

Alright, I'm going to get some sleep. It's going to be another busy day for me. Really busy, in fact.  I look forward to taking a few minutes to take on the next challenge.

And remember,  if you'd like to know more about the 30 Day Photography Challenge, possibly join in on something fun, or check out some photography that just blows mine out of the water, then take a gander at my pal Melodie's blog-

30 DAY PHOTOGRAPHY CHALLENGE! (DAY 8)

Here we go-- day EIGHT of the 30 Day Photography Challenge.  I didn't really expect that today's challenge would be so hard to decide on. I hope you dig it...

Today's challenge- A Photo Of Something Close Up.

It came down to plastic knives or typewriter innards today. I really dug both shots. As you can tell, the typewriter won out. Shooting close ups is a bit tricky. Macro isn't always easy. I really wanted to make sure that both the pegs in the background and the one in the foreground were as in focus as possible.  I'm pretty sure by the time I got the shot my iPhone 4 camera was about to give out on me from the abuse.

I'm going to keep things short and sweet today. Honestly, I need some sleep.

Oh, can't forget to mention, if you'd like to know more about the 30 Day Photography Challenge, possibly join in on the good times, or just check out some of my pal Melodie's absolutely beautiful photography, go to her blog-

DESK SHOT 33!

It's time again today for another Desk Shot. This time around, I don't have a lot of time to say much. I'm pressing hard to finish up a big deadline, this week. It's going to be some long hours, but I can pull it off. I'm good under pressure! :)

On a quick note, I'm as proud of todays Desk Shot as I have been of anything in a while. I can't show the whole page without really spoiling some big things coming up in ARTIFACTS.

I really hope you enjoy today's shot. I can't wait until I can show the whole thing. It's...epic.

Okay, now back to work for me!
Thanks-

30 DAY PHOTOGRAPHY CHALLENGE! (DAY 7)

Has it been a week of the 30 Day Photography Challenge, already? Wow. I had a little help with today's challenge. I'm really happy with the way it came out. Hope you think so too!

Today's challenge- A Silhouette Photo.

Silhouette. I'm pretty sure everyone taking part in this challenge should give themselves an extra pat on the back for not only getting the shot, but being able to spell the word. In comics we use the word quite a bit. Characters are always creeping around in silhouette. To this day, every time I type the word, I have to stop and make sure I got it right. But I digress...

Today's challenge was an extra bit of fun. Melodie, the lady that bullied me into taking the 30 Day Challenge, was in town this afternoon and dropped by to say hi.  I'm secretly sure she was just making sure that I wasn't slipping, but you know... While we were out doing some shooting and chatting about photography I conned her into being the subject of the silhouette challenge. We were standing on a fire escape downtown at around 7, just as the sun was stating to set. The light was just amazing. I really like the way this shot turned out. There's something so simple about it. The halo effect from the sun plays nicely against the silhouette. I suppose the silhouette itself could have been a bit darker, but hey, that's part of the fun. Stuff just happens. I like that. A lot.

A quick side note about this challenge. Part of this is taking a new photo and posting it each day. I really adhere to that. More than once I've taken a shot and REALLY wanted to save it for later, but I don't. With busy work and life schedules, it's kind of a pain. There's a certain spontaneity to all of this, though. That makes it a nice time.

So, anyway, if you'd like to know more about the 30 Day Photography Challenge, possibly join in on the hubbaloo, or just check out some of Melodie, the lady in today's pics outstanding photography, go to her blog-

DESK SHOT 32!

I intended to get this up before now, but bouncing back and forth between Artifacts and The Beauty had me focusing on some other pages for a while.

As you can see here, my trusty assistant, Amber went in and filled in all of the black areas of the panel. Kind of makes a bit more sense now, I know. I'm actually planning on doing a blog about assistants, exactly what they do and how they can help streamline your workflow sometime soon.  Mostly it's about filling in the black areas after I've inked a page, though. That is a huge timesaver and Amber is actually really excellent at it. Like I said, more on that later.

So anyway, there you have it, the fully inked and filled panel. I'm really happy with the way this shot turned out. It's a  nice establishing shot with definite foreground, middle ground, and background elements. On top of that I finished the panel below it, so you get a nice peek at panel two. Not a crazy action sequence, I know, but important just the same.

I'm going to be working double time over the next week, so expect a few desk shots. I'm going to have plenty to show. ...well, from what I'm ALLOWED to show. :)

As always, thanks for checking out my little corner of the web. I appreciate it.

Until next time--

30 DAY PHOTOGRAPHY CHALLENGE! (DAY 6)

Day six! Still going strong with the 30 Day Photography Challenge. After yesterday's open ended challenge today we're back at it with the set parameters.

Today's challenge- A Photo From A Low Angle.

Today's challenge was, well, challenging. Not because I couldn't find something that I liked. Actually the opposite. I had a bit of trouble narrowing it down to just one. We'd gone on a bit of a road trip, around the four state area, doing a bit of flea marketing. Along the way, I took the challenge and looked up. I love small town America. Living here at the point of the four states, it's pretty easy to go from Missouri, to Kansas, then on to Oklahoma all in a couple of hours. In each small town I took a few shots with my iPhone. As I've mentioned before I love structures, so I ended up with a pretty vast array of buildings and signs. I almost went with a shot of the Colman Theater sign from Miami, Oklahoma. Somehow though, I kept going back to this shot of the frame of a dilapidated batting cage.  There was something about the simplicity of it that spoke to me. I really loved the silhouette against the grey, overcast sky. Anyway, yeah, not a lot to it, but I accomplished the challenge and am pretty happy with the shot. Can't ask for more than that.

Well, I guess that's it for day four. Thanks for checking it out.

30 DAY PHOTOGRAPHY CHALLENGE! (DAY 5)

We've come to day five of the 30 Day Photography Challenge! In spite of another pretty busy work day, I managed to grab a quick shot for the challenge. After a few days with more specific parameters, this one was a little more open ended. Suddenly I'm left wondering what the heck I'm going to shoot... Well here is what I came up with.

Today's challenge- A Photo Of Whatever You Please

There were three things that I wanted to incorporate into the shot: the things that I work with every day, something linear and almost structural without being a building, and the beautiful fall light that we've been having in the late afternoons.  I decided on a shot of a pile of pens and brushes dropped on the floor in a pool of sunlight. Everything covered. Voilà!  It's pretty simple, but I like it. With the natural light, it's a bit softer than I normally like to shoot. But even that has it's charm. There's something that I love about allowing of things to just happen in camera. I know, I know. It's not the most professional approach. But hey, that's part of the joy of photography as a hobby. You can shoot from the hip and just have fun with it.

30 DAY PHOTOGRAPHY CHALLENGE! (DAY 4)

It's day four of the 30 Day Photography Challenge and I'm still going strong. I've been working long hard hours finishing up Artifacts and The Beauty. Taking a little time to snap a shot is a nice little break and gets me into a different kind of creative headspace. Most of all I'm having a good time. And what's more important than that?

Todays challenge- A Photo From A High Angle

I love shooting structure. Put me in a city or an old building and I could shoot for days. I love looking at things from odd angles. There is that point where you have to actively look at something to figure out what it is. For a second all you see in line and shape. I really like that.  I feel like I pulled that off here. This shot was taken from the top of the fire escape behind the old Howsmons building. I shot it on my iPhone 4. As much as I enjoy shooting with my Canon SLR, there's something easy and freeing about just snapping things with the phone. I think the camera gets some beautiful shots. Glad I didn't drop it. :)

So that's it for day four. Thanks for checking it out.
