Hey folks, I intended to post this earlier, but I've been pretty busy working to hit deadlines. This upcoming Saturday, March 6th will be the third annual HURLEYCON here in Joplin, MO. It's a great local comic convention put on by my good friends Jason and Nathan Hurley. I'll be attending the show, as always, along with a nice assortment of other comic creators including, Jason Aaron, Dennis Hopeless, Brian Koshak, Kevin Mellon, B. Clay Moore, Mike Norton, Javier Saltares, Steven Sanders, Kyle Strham and many more. I'll have the usual setup of comics, original comic art, and various crazy stuff. I'll also be doing sketches all day. If you're in the area drop by and say "hi!", you won't be sorry!

NEW 2010 SKETCHBOOK!!

I've had a few emails recently asking if I'm going to be doing a new sketchbook this year. It kind of got me to thinking that it might be time to do something a little different. Instead of going with the usual 40pg ashcan style sketchbook, this year I'm going to put together something a little bigger and more elaborate. It's still in the works, but I'm working on a new 250 (or so) page black and white, perfect bound, 7.5 x 9.6 in sketchbook. It will collect sketches, character studies (like the one of the Penguin featured above), commissions, thumbnails, pencils, and inks from my ten years of making comics. Some stuff you've seen before, along with a lot of work you probably haven't. It will be affordably priced at $25.o0. I'll be bringing them with me to cons this summer and will have a link to them here on my site. I'm also CONSIDERING doing a special edition 8.5 x 11 hardcover, if there is enough interest. If you're interested in one of the sketchbooks, especially in me doing the special edition hardcover, drop me an email.

DETECTIVE COMICS!!!

Hey folks, it's just been announced that I'll be getting to take a crack drawing DETECTIVE COMICS! I've been having to sit on this for a while, so I'm really happy to get to finally talk about it. The two issue arc, DETECTIVE COMICS 864 and 865 (is it an arc when it's two issues?) will be written by the amazing David Hine who I've worked with previously on Battle For the Cowl: ARKHAM ASYLUM and the three issue mini series ARKHAM REBORN. We're getting the chance to wrap up all of the unanswered questions left from those books. I'll also have the opportunity to draw more Batman, which makes me about as happy as it gets. This is a big step for me. I'm thankful to DC and the Bat office for giving me the chance to work on the longest running title in their library. I also want to thank all of you out there who have supported my stuff over the years. I'm going to draw my ass off on this book. I hope you all dig it!!!

Oh, also check out the amazing cover by one of the nicest and most amazingly talented guys in the industry, Cliff Chang!

Like most artists I hate about 98% of my work. It's just how it is. 2009 was a great year for me in comics. I had a lot of creative firsts: first time drawing Batman, first time drawing someone getting ripped in half and used as a club... So for my first post of 2010 I'd like to share the nine pages that (in no particular order)I'm most proud of from '09. Hope you enjoy.

Hey all! It's been quiiiiite a while since I've had the time to update. Sorry about that. The good news is over the past few months I've been working more than I ever have in my career. Comics have been good to me in '09.

Of course we've moved into a new year and a whole new decade. Things look all shiny and new. I've made my share of New Years resolutions and one of them is to be a little more active about posting to my blog. So my promise (to both of you who check this thing) is that I'm going to update at LEAST monthly. I'll try for more, but being realistic I think counting on finding the time to do anything more than eat, sleep, draw and post once a month might be a little difficult.

As I mentioned earlier, 2009 was a good year for me and from the looks of it '10 is going to be even better. Keep your eyes pealed for new projects coming your way. I'll make sure and actually post about them.

In the mean time, I'd like to also point you to my twitter page. There you can check out my mundane mutterings about what I had for lunch, what I'm scribbling on, what I'm watching, and about how I can't get that damned song "Bad Romance" out of my head.

MY PAGES FROM OUTSIDERS #19

Hey folks, I recently had the opportunity to help pencil and ink five pages of this month's Outsiders #19. It was a fun gig and I got the chance to play with some of my favorite characters, namely the Creeper and Ras al Ghul. I always get a kick out of working at DC and with the Bat Office. It's a challenge but always a good time. Anyway, I had a blast working on these pages and I'm pretty happy with the way they turned out. I hope you like them too.

Hey folks, sorry it's been SOOOOO ungodly long since my last post. We had a bit of a technical problem and then my schedule went from busy to just plain INSANE. Needless to say, I'm back and will do my best to get back to posting and updating on a semi regular basis.

I've got a lot of stuff on my plate, right now. Some of it I can talk about and some I'll be able to talk about very soon. Starting this month, I'll be penciling and inking BERSERKER from Top Cow. It's a no holds barred look at what it'd be like to have extraordinary strength and abilities but not be able to control them. I'll be talking more about the book and the process behind it's creation in the near future, but until then, check out the following sites for more Berserker info!

Hey folks, I thought I'd share a fun commission I did earlier this summer of Blondie from "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" for one of my favorite fans. Not long ago, my buddy, the colorist Russ Lowery took a stab at coloring it for me. The original was done in pen and ink with ink wash on rough 8 1/2 x 11 Bristol board. I really enjoyed working on the original piece and I think Russ did a smash up job on the colors. Hope you enjoy it!

Today's post are five of my artist proof cards from the recent Marvel Masterworks sketch cards. All five of them were done in one evening, start to finish. I decided to go with the standard characters, with the addition of possibly my favorite character to draw from the Marvel universe, Galactus (with a teeeeeeny tiny Silver Surfer to boot).

The cards were done on in pen and ink with Copic markers and a dab of Gellyroll white pen here and there. Aside from sketches at cons I really don't get much of a chance to work in color. While I won't claim to be great at it, by any means, I enjoy getting to dabble with the Copics now and then.

Alright, back to work for me. Hope you dig todays cards.

Today's post was done just for the fun of it. My buddy Aaron is a big Star Wars fan and we've had a lot of conversations lately about the new Clone Wars animated show. One thing that came up in all of that was why haven't I done more Star Wars sketches or commissions. Out of it, just for shits and giggles I decided to do a quick piece featuring Aaron as a Jedi.

This piece was done in pen and ink on 8 x 14 in rough bristol board. Like the recent Starman piece, this one was done somewhere between my slick and rougher inking styles.

Okay, that's it for todays post! This one is on time and everything! :) I'm pretty happy with this piece and I hope you dig it too! Now go tell Star Wars editorial at Dark Horse what they're missing!!!

DAILY SKETCHBOOK/COMMISSION POST (PART 5)

First off, I just want to acknowledge that this post is a few hours late. Sorry. Today was my goof off day, so I spent the majority of it watching "Quantum of Solace" and playing Rock Band 2. I'm back at it and am kicking things of with part four of my daily sketchbook/commission posts.

Today's post is kind of a companion piece to yesterday's Jack Knight Starman piece. It was done as another preparatory piece for the Starman/Sandman commission. Much like Starman, the classic Wesley Dodds Sandman is easily one of my favorite DC characters.

This piece was done in pen and ink with inkwashes on 6 x 9 in rough bristol board. This one was done in a little rougher style. I love messing with drybrush and little tricks like thumb stamping when I get the chance. They always create great depth and texture.

Today's post is another Jack Knight Starman piece. I did this one for kicks as a precursor to the Starman/Sandman piece just to mess with my take on the character. Jack Knight has always been one of those "I'd give anything to draw that character" characters. The chances of Robinson bringing Jack back and me getting to draw him are slim to none, so get a little joy out of being able to do a Starman piece once in a while.

This piece was done in pen and ink on 5 x 10 in rough two ply bristol board. The inking style is somewhere between my rough and slick styles. Sort of an all purpose look that I'll probably use on most things that I can't just fully let go on.

Alright, thats it for today. I'm down to the wire on posting this, so it might be a FEW minutes late. Sorry. I'll do better tomorrow. Hope you dig the piece!

DAILY SKETCHBOOK/COMMISSION POST (PART 3)

Today's post is a commission that I'd been dying to get to for a while now. Swamp Thing is easily one of my all time favorite characters, yet somehow, up until now, I'd never gotten the opportunity to draw him. As with a lot of characters, this one took a little figuring out as to what my take on him was going to be. That said, I'm not really doing anything revolutionary here. He's essentially the exact same character that has been drawn by a hundred different artists. Still though, in my head there was a bit more, "Now how do I approach this?" than usual.

The piece was done with pen and ink on rough two ply bristol. I toyed with the idea of doing ink washes, but was worried that it'd only mud everything up and I'd lose the detail and grit on the figure.

Another interesting thing about this piece is that it's more of a rough inking style than I usually get the opportunity to use in my work. A lot of my mainstream comics work has had a pretty slick line and somewhere along the way I think people began to really expect that from me. Lately I've had the chance to show more of this rougher inking style to some of my editors and they really seem to dig it. Hopefully this'll lead to me getting to do more of this sort of thing on some upcoming projects.

Today's post is a commissioned portrait that I did for a friend. It was done with pen and ink with ink washes and a slight watercolor tint on slick two ply bristol. Another in my series of odd sized pieces, this one was done 10 x 10 in. Once again I really feel like the square shape really set off the look of the piece. I'm happy with the way the piece turned out. While I feel that I'm good with likenesses, hell, I've done more than my share of them on books like "CHUCK", portrait work is kind of a tricky thing and not usually my cup of tea. So if you're looking for someone to draw your kids for you...I'll kindly pass, thanks.

Hey folks, decided I'd do an experiment and post one recent sketchbook or commission image a day for the next week. I'll kick things off with a Starman/Sandman commission that I recently did for a fan. Starman and Sandman are two of my favorite DC characters. The chance to draw the two of them together kinda got me geek flag flying. It was done in pen and ink with ink washes on rough two ply bristol. I've been experimenting with working at odd sizes. This one was done at 8 x 14 in, which I think really helped the overall design of the piece. Overall I'm really happy with the piece. Hope you dig it too!

MARVEL MASTERPIECES SKETCH CARDS

Hey folks, earlier this year I had the opportunity to do a few of the sketch cards for Marvel Masterpieces Series 2. With all of the hubbub of con season, it completely slipped my mind to post anything about it, but I've recently had a few people ask about them so I thought I should mention something.

I did a total of fifty cards (in the sake of full disclosure done over the course of two LOOOOONG days) a few of which I've posted above. Sorry folks, I haven't posted in FOREVER!!! Following "con season" I've had my head down finishing up the last couple of issues of CHUCK. As of yesterday, I've completed pencils and inks on CHUCK #6, the final issue of the mini series. I had a great time working on the book!

For those of you that are eagerly awaiting the next issue #5 will be hitting the stands October 29!
