After much ado and a few delays, the special hardcover edition of "PORTAL" is available for pre-order!!! The pre-order period will last until MAY 31st and will be limited to an edition of 125 copies.

The special edition hardcover of "Portal", is a 400 page, 8.25 x 10.75in, black and white sketchbook. All pre-orders will be signed and include a 4 x 4in brush and ink vellum head sketch featuring the character of your choice. I'll be accepting payment either via paypal, cashiers check, or money order of $50 US plus $5 shipping and handling. I am willing to send outside of the US, though the shipping will of course be a bit more.

To place your order, please email me here with the subject heading "PORTAL HC PRE ORDER". Please specify your chosen method of payment and who you'd like for your sketch. I'll email back confirming the order and easy payment instructions.

Given the amount of interest I'm probably looking at about one month to get all of the books out once they're back from the printer. I'll send them as I complete them, so it might be less, but lets say a month just to be safe.

C2E2 THIS WEEKEND!!!

Hey folks, C2E2- Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo is THIS WEEKEND, APRIL 16-18, and I'll be there! I will be set up in Artist Alley at Table # O1 (that's "O" as in oscar).

As usual, I'll have original artwork including everything from ARKHAM REBORN to BERSERKER, comics and trades, and a ton of other fun stuff. I'll also be doing sketches.

This year, because of how fast my list is filling up, I'm going to try and stick to head and shoulder color pieces, so that everyone can get one. I'll be asking $30 for sketches this year. Since I'm trying to stick with head and shoulder shots, I wanted to ask less than usual in order to give you guys a deal. IF I'm not busy and you're interested in a full sketch image, please feel free to ask. I can't guarantee that I'll have time to do it, but it never hurts to check. :)

PORTAL PREVIEW WEEK: THE WRAP UP

Well, with tonight's post, that's a wrap on my week long preview of my upcoming art book "PORTAL". Thanks so much for the positive response and comments about the book. I'm really glad everyone digs what they've seen so far.

We've ended up having to do a couple of last minute tweaks on the book, so I'm not going to start the pre-order until next week when I get back from C2E2. However, here is all of the final information on the book and how I'll be doing the pre-order.

"Portal", is a 400 page, black and white sketchbook. It will be available in both 7.4 x 9.6in softcover and 8.25 x 10.75in hardcover editions. The books will be priced at $25 for the softcover and $50 for the hardcover. As a special deal, for anyone who pre-orders the hardcover edition through me, I will sign the book and include a 4 x 4in brush and ink vellum head sketch.

I will start taking pre-orders for the book on MONDAY April 19th. If you are interested in pre-ordering the hardcover edition send me an email with the title "PORTAL PRE-ORDER". I'll be accepting payment either via paypal, cashiers check, or money order of $50 US plus $5 shipping and handling. PORTAL PREVIEW WEEK: DAY 7

It's day...er, well, NIGHT seven of my week long preview of my upcoming art book "PORTAL". Tonight's samples are from the 2000-2003 PARADIGM section of the book. I thought I'd make up for being a few hours late by posting a couple of sets of pages again.

It's never easy for an artist to look back on past work. I did the majority of digging through the stacks of artwork for the PARADIGM section with gritted teeth. I know a lot of people love the book. Hell, I have a lot of fond memories of working on it. Still, picking out stuff to put in an art book, from that period just isn't easy. In the end, I managed to put together a good cross section of work from the series. Honestly not a lot of PARADIGM exists, any more. I did manage to pull together a few REALLY embarrassing pages from our first attempt at the project. I think those should be a treat for true PARADIGM fans. I'll be cringing somewhere in the background, but you guys should dig it. :)

Alright, well that pretty much wraps up the majority of the preview. Tomorrow, I'll put up another image or two and the information on how you can pre-order the special edition hardcover for the book. Until then, I'm going to get back to the drawing board.

PORTAL PREVIEW WEEK: DAY 6

It's day six of my week long preview of my upcoming art book "PORTAL". I'm running a little bit late, tonight. Sorry about that. For today's preview I'm putting up a sample from the Leading Man section of the book. It features several possible cover design variations and the finished pencils for the first two Leading Man covers.

Thumbnailing out a cover can be a fun and at the same time ridiculously stressful process. Finding the right balance between good design and eye catching visuals isn't an easy thing. In the end, after several designs, I think I hit on a couple of really nice, iconic images. I'm really happy with the way these covers turned out. Especially issue one. It's easily one of the strongest covers I've drawn in my career.

Be sure and check back tomorrow for the penultimate "PORTAL" preview...wow...that's alliterative. :)

It's day five of my week long preview of my upcoming art book "PORTAL". Today I thought I'd put up another process page on a cover a did way back in '07 for my buddy Tim Seeley's book HACK/SLASH. It includes the progression from my quick thumbnails all the way through to the inks.

As usual, there are a couple of elements to it that bug the hell out of me, but on the whole, I like the way the cover turned out. I'm particularly proud of Vlad and the house in the background.

If you haven't already heard, HACK/SLASH is making the move over to Image Comics. If you aren't already reading the book, be sure and check it out. It's a ton of fun and deserves your support.

It's day four of my week long preview of my upcoming art book "PORTAL". Today I thought I'd toss up a a couple of samples (technically four pages) from the 2004-2005 section of the book. Battle Hymn is easily one of my favorite projects from my career. It came at the right time and really kind of got me to thinking that maybe I could draw just about anything. I'm damned proud of the book. Here are a couple of pages featuring character designs for the Artificial Man and a couple of pages showing both my goofy assed thumbnails and the finished pencils on the book. I really wanted to throw as much stuff into this art book showing the progression of the page, as possible. I hope you enjoy it.

It's day three of my week long preview of my upcoming art book "PORTAL". Today's sample is from the 2010 section of the book.

One of my New Year's resolutions was to do a little drawing outside of comics. As part of that I decided to put together and host a life drawing group here in my studio space. It's been a great experience and a chance for me to just artistically let go. Every session we try and bring in a different model of varying age, gender, race, and shape. In addition to that we try and add an element of costuming and theme to it. Kind of takes it beyond standard life drawing and adds a bit of fun. Even though this stuff is pretty loose and different from my comics work, I'm really fond of it. I hope you dig it too!

It's day two of my week long preview of my upcoming art book "PORTAL". Today I thought I'd put up a sample from the "early years" section of the book. Even though the book is a look at my 10 years in comics, I still wanted to throw in a few key bits from my childhood.

As with every kid born in the 70's and 80's I was OBSESSED with Star Wars. These are a few pieces from the folders upon folders of drawings of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, and co that I did around the time of A New Hope and Empire. I think I was 6yrs old when I drew these. ...need to check that and make a note of it in the text. I'm pretty sure the one on the right is a list of kids that I wanted to invite to my birthday party. I hope you dig it!

PORTAL PREVIEW WEEK: DAY 1

Kicking off the week long preview of my art book "PORTAL", I thought I'd post this self portrait/studio illustration that I did recently for the book. I always try to do a self portrait every year for my sketchbook, so I figured that I needed to do one for the big collected art book.

I've been messing around with continuous line drawings in my life drawing studio group, so I thought it would be fun to use that technique for this piece. It took about an hour and ten minutes to do and admittedly isn't one continuous line...I had to get up a couple of times to sign for a fedex package and feed the cat. Anyway, I'm pretty proud of the way it turned out. It was done with a 1.0mm Pigma Graphic and ended up being roughly 10 x 16 in on 3 ply bristol board.

Oh, I should probably go ahead and mention that I'm going to officially start taking pre-orders for the special edition hardcovers next Monday. I'll have full info on the book up next Sunday with everything that you need to know about how to pre-order.

PORTAL- ART BOOK UPDATE

My new art book, PORTAL is nearly finished and will be on its way to the printer next week. It's been kind of a crazy process, putting the whole thing together. I don't think I really understood what I was getting myself and the book designer Amber Stone into, when we started this thing. Somehow, the book has ballooned from a 250 page softcover to a whopping 400 page softcover AND a special edition, larger sized, hardcover.

Every day this week I'll be posting a new special preview from the book. I'm kicking things off with a desk shot of the painted cover. It's been a long time since I've painted anything, but I'm pretty damned happy with the way it turned out!

HURLEYCON 2010

Hey folks, I intended to post this earlier, but I've been pretty busy working to hit deadlines. This upcoming Saturday, March 6th will be the third annual HURLEYCON here in Joplin, MO. It's a great local comic convention put on by my good friends Jason and Nathan Hurley. I'll be attending the show, as always, along with a nice assortment of other comic creators including, Jason Aaron, Dennis Hopeless, Brian Koshak, Kevin Mellon, B. Clay Moore, Mike Norton, Javier Saltares, Steven Sanders, Kyle Strham and many more. I'll have the usual setup of comics, original comic art, and various crazy stuff. NEW 2010 SKETCHBOOK!!

I've had a few emails recently asking if I'm going to be doing a new sketchbook this year. It kind of got me to thinking that it might be time to do something a little different. Instead of going with the usual 40pg ashcan style sketchbook, this year I'm going to put together something a little bigger and more elaborate. It's still in the works, but I'm working on a new 250 (or so) page black and white, perfect bound, 7.5 x 9.6 in sketchbook. It will collect sketches, character studies (like the one of the Penguin featured above), commissions, thumbnails, pencils, and inks from my ten years of making comics. Some stuff you've seen before, along with a lot of work you probably haven't. It will be affordably priced at $25.o0. I'll be bringing them with me to cons this summer and will have a link to them here on my site. I'm also CONSIDERING doing a special edition 8.5 x 11 hardcover, if there is enough interest. If you're interested in one of the sketchbooks, especially in me doing the special edition hardcover, drop me an email.

DETECTIVE COMICS!!!

Hey folks, it's just been announced that I'll be getting to take a crack drawing DETECTIVE COMICS! I've been having to sit on this for a while, so I'm really happy to get to finally talk about it. The two issue arc, DETECTIVE COMICS 864 and 865 (is it an arc when it's two issues?) will be written by the amazing David Hine who I've worked with previously on Battle For the Cowl: ARKHAM ASYLUM and the three issue mini series ARKHAM REBORN. We're getting the chance to wrap up all of the unanswered questions left from those books. I'll also have the opportunity to draw more Batman, which makes me about as happy as it gets. This is a big step for me. I'm thankful to DC and the Bat office for giving me the chance to work on the longest running title in their library. I also want to thank all of you out there who have supported my stuff over the years. I'm going to draw my ass off on this book. I hope you all dig it!!!

Like most artists I hate about 98% of my work. It's just how it is. 2009 was a great year for me in comics. I had a lot of creative firsts: first time drawing Batman, first time drawing someone getting ripped in half and used as a club... Hey all! It's been quiiiiite a while since I've had the time to update. Sorry about that. The good news is over the past few months I've been working more than I ever have in my career. Comics have been good to me in '09.

Of course we've moved into a new year and a whole new decade. Things look all shiny and new. I've made my share of New Years resolutions and one of them is to be a little more active about posting to my blog. So my promise (to both of you who check this thing) is that I'm going to update at LEAST monthly. I'll try for more, but being realistic I think counting on finding the time to do anything more than eat, sleep, draw and post once a month might be a little difficult.

As I mentioned earlier, 2009 was a good year for me and from the looks of it '10 is going to be even better. Keep your eyes pealed for new projects coming your way. I'll make sure and actually post about them.

MY PAGES FROM OUTSIDERS #19

Hey folks, I recently had the opportunity to help pencil and ink five pages of this month's Outsiders #19. It was a fun gig and I got the chance to play with some of my favorite characters, namely the Creeper and Ras al Ghul. I always get a kick out of working at DC and with the Bat Office. It's a challenge but always a good time. Anyway, I had a blast working on these pages and I'm pretty happy with the way they turned out. I hope you like them too.

Hey folks, sorry it's been SOOOOO ungodly long since my last post. We had a bit of a technical problem and then my schedule went from busy to just plain INSANE. Needless to say, I'm back and will do my best to get back to posting and updating on a semi regular basis.

I've got a lot of stuff on my plate, right now. Some of it I can talk about and some I'll be able to talk about very soon. Starting this month, I'll be penciling and inking BERSERKER from Top Cow. It's a no holds barred look at what it'd be like to have extraordinary strength and abilities but not be able to control them. Hey folks, I thought I'd share a fun commission I did earlier this summer of Blondie from "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" for one of my favorite fans. Not long ago, my buddy, the colorist Russ Lowery took a stab at coloring it for me. The original was done in pen and ink with ink wash on rough 8 1/2 x 11 Bristol board. I really enjoyed working on the original piece and I think Russ did a smash up job on the colors. Hope you enjoy it!
